What Is Error Code 406 on Hulu?

Many Hulu users reported that whenever they try to stream content on the app, they are often greeted with the following error message: “406 Not Acceptable. The request is not acceptable.” or “We are having trouble loading this right now. Check your internet connection and try again. “

The Hulu error code 406 means that either the issue is with the Hulu app, streaming device, or your internet connection.

Why Does the Error Code 406 Appear?

If you’re having trouble streaming content on Hulu and the error code 406 appears on your device, this could be due to the following reasons.

  • An outdated Hulu app version, and it needs to be updated
  • Outdated TV software
  • Internet connectivity issues like poor signal strength and slow speed
  • A faulty streaming device, and it needs to be replaced
  • Hulu servers consider your IP address spam or malicious.
  • The Hulu streaming app is faulty.

How to Fix Hulu Error Code 406?

In most cases, simply relaunching the Hulu app would fix the issue. Sometimes, temporary errors may pop up after using the app for too long, causing it to malfunction. You can resolve it by exiting and relaunching the app.

However, if that doesn’t resolve the issue of error code 406, try the following troubleshooting methods. Since the Hulu app supports multiple platforms, we’ve shared a list of proven hacks and tricks that might work on Android or iOS mobile phones, Mac or PCs, streaming devices like Roku or Firestick, or smart TVs.

1. Restart Your Home Network and Streaming Device

To fix Hulu error code 406, try restarting your router/modem and streaming device. Here’s how.

  • Exit the Hulu app and shut down your streaming device.
  • Now, unplug the modem/router from the wall outlet and wait for a whole minute.
Restart Your Router
  • Plug your router back in and wait until you see that all the lights are turned on.
  • Power on your streaming device and open the Hulu app to check if it resolves the issue.

In most cases, this will fix the error code 406, allowing you to stream your favorite TV show on Hulu. However, if it doesn’t, move on to the following troubleshooting method.

2. Clear Hulu App and Browser Cache

If you’re either streaming Hulu on a web browser or the app and experiencing this error code 406, try cleaning the old cache stored on your app or web browser, like Edge, Firefox, Chrome, etc. Here’s how.

On Web Browser (Chrome)

  • Launch the Chrome browser and tap on the vertical three dots in the top right corner.
Click on the Three Vertical Dots and Open the Chrome Settings
  • Click on Settings, go to Privacy & Security, or type “chrome://settings/privacy” in the search bar.
Go to Privacy and Settings
  • Tap on the “Clear browsing data” option.
Check the Box Next to Cookies and Cached Images and Click on the Clear Data Option
  • Check the “Cached images and files“ and the “Cookies and other site data.“
  • Tap on the Clear Data option, and you’re done.

On App (Android)

Go to Apps
  • Navigate to the phone’s Settings and go to Apps.
Go to Manage Apps
  • Open Manage apps and select the Hulu app from the list.
Click on the Clear Data Option
  • Now, click on the Clear Data option, and you’re done.

After cleaning the caches, log into your Hulu account again and see if it fixes Hulu error code 406. If not, move on to the next method.

3. Check Your Internet Connection and Speed

Check your Internet Connection Speed

To stream content on the Hulu app, you need a stable or high-speed internet connection. Sometimes, your internet connection may face slow speed or unstable connection issues. So, it’s best to check your internet speed and ensure it’s sufficient to stream content on Hulu.

4. Connect to Another Network

An issue with your WiFi connection often can cause your Hulu app to show a 406 error code on display. So, it’s best to connect your streaming device to another network and relaunch the Hulu app to check if it resolves the issue.

You can also use a mobile hotspot to determine how well your home network works compared to your mobile data. If you don’t find any issues while streaming on the Hulu app using mobile data, then it’s time to contact your internet service provider to resolve the connection issue.

5. Use a Proxy Server or VPN

Use a VPN

As mentioned earlier, Hulu servers can tag an IP address as malicious. This could happen due to certain restrictions in some geographical locations. In that case, the Hulu app won’t let you log in and stream content. To resolve this, connect your device to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service. That way, you can use a secured network and get a new IP address to use the Hulu app while fixing the error code 406.

6. Use Another Device to Stream Hulu

Some users reported that they had issues using the Hulu application on their browsers. However, when they switched to the Hulu app and installed it on their smart TV, the error code 406 was long gone. So, you can also fix Hulu error code 406 by switching your streaming platform to launch the Hulu app effortlessly.

7. Update Hulu App

Hulu app developers keep introducing new patches in their app updates to resolve the current errors or bugs pointed out by users. So, if you’re using an older version of the Hulu app, update it to the latest one and see if it resolves the issue. Here’s how.

On Android

Update the Hulu App
  • Open the Google Play Store and search for the Hulu app.
  • Install the latest Hulu app version if the update option appears next to it.

You can also update your Hulu app on your Firestick, Roku player, or smart TV.

On Windows

  • Open the Microsoft store.
  • Tap on the Library icon in the bottom left corner and search for the Hulu app.
Download the Latest Version of Hulu App
  • Now, click on “Get updates” or “Update” right next to the Hulu app.

8. Reinstall Hulu App

If none of the above methods worked and you’re still getting the Hulu error code 406, you might have a corrupted Hulu app. So, it’s best to reinstall the Hulu app because you may start to encounter multiple errors whenever you launch the app. To fix this, uninstall the Hulu app and reinstall it on your streaming device. Here’s how.

On Android

Uninstall the Hulu App
  • On your smartphone, hold down the Hulu app icon and select Uninstall.
  • Once uninstalled, open the Google Play store and search for the Hulu app.
Install the Hulu App
  • Click on the Hulu app and install it.

On Windows

  • Press the Win key, search for Apps and Features, and open it.
Search for Apps and Features
  • Scroll down to the Hulu app and uninstall it.
  • Once uninstalled, restart your PC.
  • Now, open the Microsoft Store and search for the Hulu app.
Click on the Get Option to Download the Hulu App
  • Click on the “Get in Store app” or “Get” option, and installation will begin automatically.

Hopefully, reinstalling the Hulu app will fix the error code 406 on your streaming device. If not, then contact Hulu support for further assistance.

9. Contact Hulu Support

Contact Hulu support as a last resort if none of the previous methods worked to resolve the error.
